The Mid-West Regional Drugs Task Force together with the Community Substance Misuse Use Team and other community services in North Tipperary are hosting a

Substance Misuse Services Information event on Monday evening 20th of May, in the Damer Court Hotel, Roscrea. The information event will be open to the public from 7pm – 9pm. The purpose of the event is to let people know about the services available to them should they need them.

It is also an opportunity for those who may want to learn more about the impact of problematic substance misuse and addiction on the community. For the past number of years, North Tipperary VEC have been running the FETAC 5 component Community Addiction Studies Course. On the night, they will be taking names of people interested in enrolling in next years (2013/2014) course. Twenty one students completed the course last year, and a further sixteen students started the course this April.

A number of new services have started up in the Midwest region recently, all of who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about their service. This includes the Community Substance Misuse Team which aims to assist young people, families and communities develop effective and supportive coping strategies to deal with substance misuse issues. Also recently established are two different support services outreaching to adults to assist them to safely reduce their use – Ana Liffey Mid West Drug Project and the Novas Community Detox Team. These new services are in addition and complementary to the services provided by the HSE Drug & Alcohol Service based in Nenagh and Limerick.

Present on the evening also, will be staff of the Novas Respite House. The house is a drug & alcohol free space, which provides respite to the families of substance misusers, enabling them to re-engage in quality family time. This service has been going from strength to strength, with many families coming for a day initially and then coming again for overnight stays in a peaceful and calm environment. Gearoid Prendergast, Co-ordinator of the MWRDTF, “We are welcoming everyone to this open event, substance misuse issues can impact on anyone at anytime. We want to encourage people to come along to the Damer Court Hotel, have a cup of tea, walk around and see what’s available – some of these services you may not even have known existed.” If you require further information please contact Rionach Power, Mid-West Regional Drugs Task Force, 061-445392. rpower@mwrdtf.ie
