Student Enterprise Awards - St. Anne’s Community College was represented in Senior and Junior Categories of the final of the 2013 County Student Enterprise Awards on Thursday, March 7. In the Junior Section the local teenagers were outright winners, deservedly winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd awards.
The winning entry, “Happy Me.ie” was submitted by David Casey, Katie Moloney and Anna Spaight: Hannah Mooney with her ‘Irish Tourism App’ was in second place while “Trendy Night Cases” presented by Kelly Nolan, Emma Geraghty, Rosie Farrell and Aoife Daly merited third place. “Bake Outside the Box”, the Senior project of Aoife Hayes, Ciara Hayes, Ellen Finnerty and Rebekah Sartini merited first prize. Well done and congratulations to all involved, the students themselves (winners and participants), their teachers, Kathleen Egan, Mairéad Ryan and Nuala Kilkenny. All the students and indeed the entire school community extend ‘Get Well’ wishes to Kathleen, a most popular and dedicated teacher at the College for many years and also the Transition Year Co-ordinator who has encouraged and prepared students to take part in this competition for several years. All first-place winners will represent St. Anne’s and Clare in the National final in Croke Park in April and we wish them all the best of luck.
Festival - Ballina Killaloe St. Patrick’s Festival will take place on this Saturday and Sunday, March 16th and 17th. Pink Ribbon 2013 Launch - A “Human Link of Pink” was created at the Lakeside Hotel on Wednesday last in support of the fourth Pink Ribbon Walk, which will take place in Ballina-Killaloe on Sunday, June 9. This walk brings together women and men of all ages, all supporting Action Breast Cancer. Music Festival Update - The Kincora Traditional Music Weekend, which will take place from April 19 to April 21, introduces workshops on a variety of traditional Irish music instruments, song and dance. Recent Deaths - Ann Meek (nee Burke), Killaloe and formerly of Old Bawn, Tallagh died recently at Milford Care Centre. Following Funeral Obsequies in St. Flannan’s Church, Ann was laid to rest in Kilmashogue Cemetery in Dublin. She is survived by her son Andy, daughter-in-law Mary; grandchildren; sisters, relatives, extended family and friends.
Tom Hayes, The Glen, Killaloe died peacefully at Millbrae Lodge Nursing Home, Newport on March 6. Following Requiem Mass in Garranboy Church Tom was buried in the adjoining cemetery. He is survived by his siblings Mary, Mai read, Bridie, Christy and Rody: nieces, nephews, relatives, extended family and friends.
Handballer in All-Ireland - Ballina handballer, Martin McInerney has won his All-Ireland Masters’ ‘B’ Semi-final. Martin made the long journey to Co. Down where he took on local player, Tom Savage and showed no ill effects from the long drive as he powered his way to a 21-12, 21-9 win to earn his place in the All-Ireland final, which will take place in the coming weeks. In the Intermediate Singles semi-final Ger Coonan was beaten 21-13, 21-16 by Shane O’Neill from Tyrone. This coming weekend will see James Prentice and his ‘doubles’ partner, Jerome Cahill from Lahorna, play their U/14 doubles All-Ireland semi-final against Ulster opposition. Quiz - Tipperary GAA County Board is targeting 1,000 in the local heats of the All County Table Quiz, which will be held on Friday, March 15. Your local venue is the Roundhill Bar and participants must by seated and ready for the first round of questions on Tipp FM. Local winners from the heats will go forward to the Grand County Final in The Dome, Semple Stadium on Thursday, March 28 where the outright winning table will receive four tickets to New York. Clubs must have a minimum of five tables to send forward a winning team to the County final with the added incentive that two teams can go forward if fifteen tables compete and three for over twenty-five tables.
