Thurles Toastmasters Club members are this week putting the finishing touches to preparations for one of the highlights of the year, the Annual Speech contest. This will take place on Wednesday next, 2nd March, in the Anner Hotel, Thurles.
In the normal course of events, Toastmasters Club evenings feature members’ speeches which are either prepared beforehand or delivered in an impromptu manner on the night. Speeches can be light-hearted or serious, they can include technology to deliver the message, or they may be delivered simply with the minimum of fuss on a topic of the speaker’s own choosing. The Speech Contest, however, is more demanding since the speakers must meet clearly defined criteria within a strict time limit. Judging is carried out by a panel of club members, and the successful speakers can then progress to the next stages of the competition, which go right on to international level.
Toastmasters Clubs exist to assist their members gain confidence and proficiency in public speaking and Thurles Club has been to the forefront in achieving those aims for over twenty years now. An unique feature of Toastmasters is the fact that club meetings are open to the general public and visitors are always welcome. This will be equally true on the night of the Speech Contest on the 2nd March next. If you would like to be entertained by a group of very skilful speakers, then you will be very welcome in the Anner Hotel on that evening at 8.00 p.m. There is no cover charge and, as always at meetings, refreshments will be provided.
