Queen of the Suir Festival - Festival Fever hit the parish of Golden/Kilfeacle when the Queen of the Suir festival kicked off on Wednesday, 22nd June. Opening night was a Health Talk in the Community centre by Anne Morrissey. On Thursday night a Monster Bingo was held in the Community Centre where substantial prize money proved a big draw and record crowds were in attendance. Friday night saw the ladies of the parish dressed up and out to support the festival Fashion Show. This was our first chance to see the fifteen possible queens as they modelled along with some local children and quite a few celebrity models from the parish. The night was a huge success and ended with Mary Ryan Landy, Cloughaleigh crowned as a well deserved best dressed lady on the night. The Kiddies Festival on Saturday afternoon in the Community Centre proved a great draw for the kids of the parish where Art Competitions, Magicians, Face Painting and Disco kept all entertained for many hours. Saturday night was ‘Beat on the Island’ and the much anticipated Wife Carrying contest. After many closely contested heats the final pairing saw Brian and Trish Fogarty take on Tom and Julie Tierney. Brian’s speed out of the blocks proved too much for the Tierney duo and the Fogarty combo were not to be stopped. The night ended with a BBQ and Dance hosted by the Bridge House, Golden.
Sunday’s Festival kicked off with an U/8 and U/10 Blitz with our local team taking on teams from Rockwell Rovers, Bansha and Rosegreen. The warm afternoon sunshine ensured a big crowd in attendance for the Sports and Family day. Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Dog Show and Monster Auction were just some of the attractions on the day which ended with Christine Marnane and Miley O’Keeffe crowned as best dressed.
Sunday night saw the Festival Dance in the Community Centre and the announcement of the much awaited Queen of the Suir winner, Jennifer O’Connell of Ballilina, Golden proved a very popular winner on the night. Congratulations Jennifer.
