QUAY SERENADES SUMMER SERIES - Munster Music Academy Killaloe in association with Quay Arts, Ballina will present  Quay Serenades  monthly concert series in Quay Arts over the summer months. The first performance at 3pm on this Sunday, May 6 will feature renowned Irish cellist and Munster Music Academy director, Tara-Lee Byrne partnered by International prize-winning Northern Ireland pianist, Ruth McGinley.  Admission is €10 adults, €7.50 children and family ticket €32.00 (two adults & two children). BEALTAINE 2012 - On Friday, May 4 an Art Exhibition entitled ‘Remember When...’ by senior groups and individuals from the area celebrating creativity, will open in the new Community Cafe on Main Street in Killaloe at 2pm and run for one month. On Friday, May 18 an ‘Afternoon Music & Song with Paul Brown’ will take place also in the Community Café at 2pm. Any person in the district who wishes to exhibit art work should contact the Family resource Centre before Wednesday evening. PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION - “Re-Connect”, a photographic exhibition by local lady, Norma Manly will run at Quay Arts, Ballina from May 9 to May 24.

This exhibition explores the issue of emigration. It follows the lives of the aging Irish community in New York, bringing alive their intense love and pride for their place of birth.

FROM KILLALOE TO MONAGHAN BY “KAYAK”! - The 2012 Tommy Bowe Challenge commemced in Killaloe on Sunday last when twelve men from the Emyvale area, - Richard Mulligan, Eamon Hackett, Brian Finn, Declan McNally, Michael McQuaid, John Curley, Michael Deery, Eamonn Treanor, Jim McAllister, Victor Fields, Michael Liddle, Shane McKenna and the coaching team of Davy Thom, Gerry Brennan and Tony McEntee – set out from Killaloe in six Kayaks to spend six gruelling days completing a fundraising 300km ‘row’ on the Shannon-Erne waterway. Local lady, Laura Dillon, Derrydemesne, accompanied them on a Safety Rib – some of the participants/organisers are members of Laura’s family/extended family from Monaghan. All the rowers are members of Glaslough Harriers AC and are raising funds to provide modern facilities for the next generation of Glaslough Harriers. Tommy Bowe, who was a member of the Harriers in his younger days, is delighted to support the team as they take on the challenge of the Shannon from Killaloe to Monaghan.

SCOUTING EVENTS - The Wednesday Beavers had a day outing to Shannon Airport last Saturday.  Spirits were high as they visited the Emergency Services tower where they later met the fire fighters who took them on a trip out around the taxiways in the fire tenders and they were shown how to operate the water cannons and the sirens.  The outing also included a meal at the local McDonalds.

RECENT DEATHS - Paddy O’Riordan, Cullina, Ballina died peacefully at the Midwest Regional Hospital on Sunday, April 22. Following funeral obsequies in the Church of Our Lady and St. Lua, Paddy was laid to rest in Ballina Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Peggy; daughter, Lorraine: sons, Patrick, Tony and Finbarr: grandchildren: sisters, Vera and Phil: extended family, relatives and friends.

Tom Reddan, St. Lua’s Villas, Killaloe died suddenly at his residence on Friday last. Following Requiem Mass in St. Flannan’s Church, Killaloe Tom was buried in Reilig Lua. He is survived by his wife Mary: daughters, Mary and Lorraine: sisters, Annie and Mary: grandchildren: extended family, relatives and friends.

We extend sincere sympathy to the O’Riordan and Reddan families.

BORÚ TRI CLUB - Starting this Wednesday night, the Ború Tri Club has organised a 6km run series starting at the Smith O’Brien GAA pitch at 7.30pm. People of all ages and abilities, members/non members, are invited to come along each Wednesday evening.

The 2012 Ború Tri challenge will take place on Sunday, August 5.

GAA FUN DAY - You are reminded that this Saturday is the “Give Respect, Get Respect” annual Family fun and Respect Day in Ballina. The children will have extra focus on fun activities at their normal training times, Spot Prizes will be on offer to players showing respect to team-mates and coaches. This will be followed by the parents’ involvement in activities such as Tug of War, penalty shooting and hurling penalties. Where possible parents should wear their own county colours on the day.

BALLINA CAMOGIE - The U14 county championship is well under way now and three games have been played so far, resulting in two wins and one draw. Our most recent game was a well- earned 8-4 to 1-1 victory on Thursday last against Kildangan.

The final two group games are due to be played this week against Shannon Rovers and Lorrha.

We wish Jessica Ryan and Mary Power the best of luck representing Tipperary U14’s in their upcoming tournament in Ennis on Monday next.

Training continues for U6, U8 and U10 girls on Saturdays and Wednesdays and as always, new members are welcome to come along.  

BALLINA – KILLALLOE RFC - The 2011-12 playing season ended in triumph with the East Clare Under-13 side winning their Conference Final by virtue of a hard-earned 12-7 victory over Presentation at Annacotty on Monday, April 11.
