AN Post has been accused of having no loyalty to the people of Templemore over its decision to close the town’s sorting office.

Cllr Jim O’Shea warned at a meeting of Templemore Town Councl that the post office will eventually be closed if An Post keeps downgrading its services.

And Cllr Michael Ryan told the meeting that An Post was “taking the heart of the country out of the country. It is unforgiveable what they are doing to our small communities. It is another effort to kill of rural Ireland.”

The sorting office in Templemore was due to close last Monday week and its staff transferred to Thurles, but the office has been given a reprieve for a few weeks.

The issue was raised at the meeting by Cllr Maura Byrne, who described it as a “blow to business”. She wanted to know if there was anything the council to do to prevent its closure. She was supporrted by all councillors.
