Young Musician Guests With Acclaimed Group

A young musician was overwhelmed last week after he received an invitation from We Banjo3 to guest with them on a leg of their Irish Tour. Darragh Carey-Kennedy who hails from Roscrea joined the band when they played the Palace Loft Athlone and he was accorded a very generous slot to perform his talents to a very appreciative audience, by the group.

Darragh is no stranger to public concerts having played to full houses in venues such as Bru Boru, Dun an Uladh, Portglenone, and the Birr Theathre not to mention all major fleadhvenues in the last six years. He is a six time All Ireland Champion on various instruments, and he has recently received a distinction on level eight in traditional music exams with the London School of Music. Darragh lays a lot of his success from haed work in practise and his music teacher Melaine Thompson.

We Banjo3 are highly acclaimed in the music scene, they comprise of Enda Scahill and The Howley Brothers, Martin and David. Enda Scahill has recorded albums Pick it Up, and in collaboration with Paul Brock “Humdinger which was Trad Album of the year” he also recorded “Green Grass Blue Grass” with the Brock Maguire Band, this band was voted band of the decade by the Irish American News. Martin Howley is a seven time All Ireland Champion, and he was the first Irish Banjo player to play at the Grand Ol Opry, his brother David is a for time All Ireland Champion. Their latest Album “Roots of the Banjo Tree” has recieved wild reveiws and is destined to be a huge hit.

Darragh said that it was a momentous occasion for him and he described the experience as that of a first division player playing premier league. He is well known through out the traditional scene not alone here in Ireland but by trad followers in Britian, European mainland and the U.S.A., this was provedin Cavan this year when he was greeted by fleadh go’ers from these regions.

Darragh is currently a second year pupil in Collaiste Phobal and a member of Roscrea Comhaltas. He hopes to take up teaching beginners and improvers on Banjo and Mandolin in the not to distant future and hopefully many more experiences such as last weekend.
