The Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles, Co Tipperary, celebrated fantastic results in the Junior Cert last week as three of its students earned 12 As in their exams. The Ursuline was the only school in the country to have three students with those marks, with 19 students out of 60,000 sitting the Junior Cert receiving 12 As.
Leah Carroll, 15, from Fennor, Urlingford, Cait Ryan from Upperchurch and Simone Gordon from Roscrea were the three students who were celebrating the Ursuline hat-trick.
The three girls are now in transition year, Leah and Cait in Thurles and Simone in Germany.
Principal Mary Butler was delighted with the results, saying: “While we celebrate the amazing 12 As, we are also mindful of those for whom school is a struggle and congratulate them on their efforts and their results.”
The mix of academia and extra-curricular can be seen among the three girls who are top of the class of 2012 in the country with Leah Carroll being an avid violin and piano player in the senior school orchestra, she takes part in debating and is a camogie player with Emeralds in Urlingford.
“It’s important to stay involved with what you’re interested in as well as working consistently in school; that’s why the Ursuline school is so great, there is so much going on, from sport to the musical, Oklahoma underway,” says Leah.
Leah who has an interest in science and languages is still not sure what career path she would like to take but hopes to study in Dublin.
The emphasis on promoting the mix of academia and involvement in other activities can be seen through the success of Cait who is also very musical with a big tradition of Irish music in her family and Simone’s tennis playing.
Simone Gordon received her results over the phone from Principal Ms Butler as she is currently doing a year abroad in Dusseldorf, Germany with her parents, Christina and Paul who work for telecommunications company, Ericsson.
Meanwhile Leah and Cait celebrated their results at the Junior Cert disco in Hayes on Friday night.
Tipperary fared well overall in the results with Robert O’Donnell of Pallasgreen, Co Limerick and Abbey School CBS, Tipperary and Kate Johnston, of Loreto Secondary School, Clonmel also receiving 12 As in their exams.
