Tipperary Town seeking Disability ‘Gold Star’ Status

Tipperary Town is setting out to match the achievement of Cashel, in setting “Gold Star” standards of disability awareness and universal access for wheelchair users and the visually impaired in its community. A new ‘Tipperary Gold Star’ logo is featuring in recently erected signage on approach roads to the town.

The logo for the signage was developed by students from the local schools, following an art competition in Tipperary Town based on the original Cashel Gold Star logo. The winning students were Garry Breen of Abbey CBS, Anne Marie Burns of St. Anne’s SC and Darragh McGrath of St. Ailbe’s SC. Marking the latest development in the Tipperary Gold Star Project, its HSE provided co-ordinator Anne Bradshaw says: “The aim of the Gold Star Project, which was initiated by the HSE as an inter agency community initiative, is to encourage all businesses and service providers to strive towards achieving universal access for all customers, and to gain a Gold Star status for their business or service”.

“Many local businesses in Tipperary Town are actively supporting the Gold Star project, through engagement in various initiatives and events to date. Tipperary Integrated Rural Development (TIRD) and Tipperary Town Chamber of Commerce are hugely supportive. Recently the Tipperary Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association and participants from the Moorehaven Centre took part in a ‘wheelabout’ in Tipperary Town, highlighting access barriers for wheelchair users and people with visual impairments along with also accentuating positives in the Town. In the coming months the Task Group will be working with businesses and services in the town to address these issues in the most cost effective way possible.”

“One such project underway in partnership with the South Tipperary Development Company (STDC) is a Spring Clean 2013 Litter Awareness Campaign. The project aims to focus on the impact of litter in our community, with specific focus on the impact of dog fouling and chewing gum on people with disabilities.”
