Tipp Meningitis Survivor Urges “Be MeningitisWise”

A Tipperary meningitis survivor is encouraging his local community to Be MeningitisWise during Meningitis Awareness Week (17-23 September) and know the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia as he had first hand experience of the disease.

Meningitis and septicaemia are the biggest killers of children aged under-five in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, with babies especially vulnerable because of their weak immune systems.

Adam said “I am unlucky enough to have had bacterial Meningitis twice, – at 5 months and 9 years of age, however my experiences have influenced my interests and may help others in the future. I am now a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist, and am now doing studying Computational Biology – an area of study that aims to find better detection systems for quicker discovery of infections like Meningitis. This is a life changing and potentially deadly disease, please err on the side of caution if you or a love one suspect anything”.

Diane McConnell, Deputy Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) and Ireland Manager said: “There is currently no vaccine for meningococcal B disease which is responsible for the majority of cases of disease in the UK and Ireland. We run Meningitis Awareness Week every September to empower the public with the knowledge to know the symptoms, trust their instincts and act quickly. We hope that the people of Munster will Be MeningitisWise as it may save a life.”
