Dr Conor Malone, from Templemore, was recently appointed Chief Registrar at UPMC Beacon hospital. The 28 year old attended Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore, achieved the coveted 600 points in his Leaving Certificate and received a scholarship to undertake medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin.

“I’ve been in Dublin for about ten years now but it only feels like yesterday that I was doing athletics with Martin Leyden in the park,” says Dr Malone.

Specialising in Ophthalmology (the eye to you and me), Dr Malone always loved science and medicine was a natural progression from this.

“It’s a really fulfilling job. I get to put the theory and science into practical use. I love to travel and that’s another great thing about this line of work, it’s kind of a ‘passport degree,’ adds Dr Malone.

Conor hopes to go abroad to finish his training.

While undergoing PhD research at the RCSI, Dr Malone acts as a tutor of Ophthalmology at RCSI and is the first international Chief Registrar at UPMC Beacon.

As Chief Registrar, Dr Malone will have be chief of 25 fully employed NCHDs (Non Consultant Hospital Doctors), which include 19 registrars, six senior house officers and rotating medical students from RCSI.

He will essentially be overseeing an education curriculum that includes eight Continuing Medical Education events each week, including two Grand Round video conferences with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre main campus.

Speaking about his appointment, Dr Conor Malone said: “I’m really looking forward to getting sorted in my new role. I know it will be a challenge but I am excited to further develop the registrar programme and to ensuring that all the hospital’s registrars and students are kept abreast of the latest in clinical education and training.”

“We are very proud of our unique position as the only private teaching hospital that operates an NCHD programme in Ireland and believe it is important that our junior doctors and medical students have a representative amongst the staff,” said Dr. Jennifer Westrup, the Director of Medical Education
