Thurles Supports Call on High Trees
members of Thurles Town Council have this week supported a resolution from Monaghan Town Council calling for legislation to be introduced to allow for the removal or cutting back of trees which are excessively high and blocking light from neighbouring properties.
The matter was raised at the monthly meeting of the Town Council this week following comments from Councillor Jim Ryan who pointed out two problematic areas in Thurles at Kennedy Park and Mitchel Street where high trees are causing difficulties for residents.
“This is a problem and because the trees are on private property there is little enough that can be done about it. At least if legislation was in place we might be able to tackle it. These two areas of town are in complete darkness because of the trees with the lights on all day long and it is my view that there should be some legislation covering this,”Cllr Ryan said.
Cllr John Kennedy supported the call and said that whatever the council could do should be done in a bid to solve the problems being experienced.
Cllr John Kenehan felt that there should be a height limit on trees which have the potential to block the light of neighbouring properties while Cllr Noel Dwyer said that he had personal experience of having removed a tree from his own property and could not believe the light is created.
Thurles Mayor Michael Cleary also added that trees and bushes which are extending over walls and onto footpaths and pedestrain areas should also be cut back as they cause problems for those using the paths, especially people pushing buggies.
Thurles Town Manager Mr Matt Shortt said that trees and the blocking of light have the potential to cause huge problems between neighbours. However, he pointed out that the council has no role whatsoever in the limiting of tree heights on private property and would not be in a position to introduce by-laws either.
