ST Patrick’s Hospital for the elderly in Cashel is to lose 39 beds, most of them transferring to Our Lady’s Hospital nearby.
The shock announcement comes following a HIQA inspection which found “serious environmental issues” with the respite service beds, along with an above-average absenteeism rate among staff, heard Cashel Town Council on Monday.
Mayor Séan McCarthy – a member of the South East Regional Forum of the HSE - was told they were to discuss the service plan for the whole region, including South Tipperary, at a meeting last Thursday (March 28). At around 6pm he received a message from a HSE manager, explaining that there would be “radical changes” at St Patrick’s. These include transferring staff and patients associated with 39 beds out of the hospital for health and safety reasons.
The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) had found “serious environmental issues” in relation to the “continuing care for beds, and respite service, and the rehab components.” “The HSE was presented with a situation of doing what HIQA says,” announced Dr McCarthy. “It’s a question of 39 beds being totally closed.”
