Spring Has Sprung! - Ballingarry

In Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “Spring” he says “Nothing is so beautiful as spring- When weeds in wheels grow long and lovely and lush.”

On Tuesday morning last one would have been forgiven for thinking we were in the midst of November when we awoke to find ourselves wrapped in a blanket of snow. Travelling to Ballingarry on such a morning awoke our sense of wonder and awe as we took in its wonderful and picturesque landscape. Despite the trepidation which undoubtedly was felt by many drivers this picture postcard scene certainly uplifted the heart.

Lent 2013

We are delighted once again to support the work of Trocaire as an essential part of our Lenten preparation for Easter. On a recent visit to our school Claire O’ Carroll, Trocaire’s Education officer thanked the school for its involvement in fundraising for Trocaire which has resulted in the accumulation of twenty six thousand Euros over the past ten years. This year the campaign focuses on India and once again while our students will fundraise through participating in The Trocaire “Give it up” campaign we will also strive to raise awareness around issues of inequality and injustice.

In India Trocaire works in the state of Odisha with local partner organisations to organise, educate and empower poor rural communities. This partnership reflects the partnership that exists between Presentation Secondary School, Ballingarry and St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Chennai which is run by the Presentation Sisters. Ours is an on-going partnership and this year the school has begun fundraising to sponsor the education of one of the poor children from the impoverished slum areas of Chennai. Students had an opportunity to contribute to this fund by contributing to a no uniform day.

1st & 2nd Year Lincoln Project

On Wednesday 5th our first and second years had the wonderful opportunity of learning about Lincoln outside of the classroom as they were treated to a morning at the cinema. In preparation students prepared a number of presentations on “Slavery in America,” “The Great Quotations of Abraham Lincoln” and “The American Civil War.” Tipped for Oscar glory, Daniel Day-Lewis stared as Abraham Lincoln in this Steven Spielberg epic about the legendary American President’s battle to abolish slavery. A great day was had by all and the students enjoyed this novel and very educational learning experience.Students are now busy compiling their reviews of the Film.
