Spring Clean for Templemore
TEMPLEMORE Town Council is appealing to the “civic spirit” of all townspeople this Spring, to help with a total clean-up and revamp of the town centre.
Cllr Maura Byrne said it was a disgrace that some people are still dumping their cigarettes on public paths, rather into ashtrays. More bins are needed in the centre of town, she said. Cllr Mick Connell said the town centre needs a touch of paint. Some people have no “civic spirit” at all with regards to littering. Mayor Michael Ryan said it would be an idea for April, in line with the national spring cleaning week, for townspeople to help with sprucing up Templemore. “Businesses can get on board, with cleaning and planting flowers. We can see what civic spirit there is in the town. I do appeal to anybody, if they are interested, to help out for a week in April.”
Town Clerk Tom McGrath warned that the Council is “not a bottomless pit of responsibility” and cannot achieve everything in town. “Word of mouth is the way to go,” said Cllr Connell. They will be looking for people with paint and powerhoses to finish the job. The Spring Clean week takes place from April 8th.
Cllr Martin Fogarty warned against focusing solely on Patrick Street and the Main Street. “I’d have serious reservations about asking people to clean up just two streets,” he said. Cllr Maura Byrne said it was her understanding that the clean up would take place from the Church to the Borrisoleigh Road, whereas the painting is for “the centre of town.
