Wind spoils decider which ended up being a massive battle of will

Loughmore Castleiney edged the Centenary Agri Mid senior hurling championship final to bridge a gap going back to 2011, when they needed extra time to see off challengers Drom-Inch at a very windy Templetuohy.

This game had the potential of being a cracking final, but instead, thanks to the huge gale blowing right down the centre of the field, we got a huge contest, a battle of wills, and a final which placed more importance on winning dirty ball, than silken skills.

There was no Seamus Callanan for Drom-Inch - he was away on holiday much to the disappointment of him teammates - he would surely have been worth a point or two at least. And, a point was all that separated the sides after extra time as the Loughmore Castleiney men ran out 1-20 to 2-16 winners.

They had played with the gale in the first half but were actually trailing at the break by 2-6 to 1-8 - Drom-Inch have stolen goals from David Butler and Paul Kennedy within three minutes of the interval. And, it was the eventual champions who came from behind to force extra time, getting the last three scores in actual time, including the leveler from All-Ireland minor hurling captain Brian McGrath who had just come on as a sub.

In extra time the champions managed another four points to Drom-Inch's three  and managed to hold out as chances went abegging for the champions of 2-13 and 2014.

Elsewhere, a late Eoin Kelly free sealed victory for Mullinahone in the south senior hurling final over rivals and neighbours Killenaule, while in the Hibernian Inn  north senior championship Kildangan and Kilruane MacDonagh had wins over Roscrea and Burgess to set up a mouthwatering final on Sunday next in Cloughjordon - the first appearance by Kilruane MacDonagh in the final for 26 years.
