Fresh from winning their first league title this month, Cashel Town FC’s girls went on to taste more success last weekend.
The club’s U13s won gold in the county final of the Community Games at the Canon Hayes centre in Tipperary against reigning champions Newport. Three Cashel teams were representing the town, and first up were the girls U10’s who despite taking an early lead, were reeled in at the end and lost their final by five goals to three. The U10 boys were next up, and like their female counterparts, found the increased speed of the indoor game disconcerting and lost out by three goals to one. Then came the game of the day. The U13 girls were out against a Newport team who were current champions and who had gone all the way to the All-Ireland finals last year. In a crowded hall where the noise was deafening, the girls started nervously, and went one behind early on. But they slowly but surely found their feet, and equalised just before half time when Emily Mc Grath took down a ball just outside the shooting area, and beat the Newport keeper. Newport then scored again and looked like they would take a winning lead when they were awarded a penalty with five minutes left, but Aoibhe Gayson Molloy made a brilliant save to keep her team in the game. The minutes ticked away with the Cashel girls a goal down, and when Ciara Dwan rattled the bottom of the post with two minutes left, it looked like it was not going to be the girl’s day. But these players are fighters, and Dwan made amends with the last kick of the game when she levelled the game to huge delight. This goal raised the girls to new heights, and in the first half of extra time, Emily Mc Grath powered a free kick past the Newport keeper to put her team in front for the first time. From then on, it was a brave defensive display from Capt. Sophie O’Shea, and our two younger players Grace O Dwyer and Eve Moloney that kept the girls on course to win their first county title. The girls will now go on to Limerick in July to represent Tipperary in the Munster finals.
