CSF Final - Loughmore Castleiney 3-10 Aherlow gaels 0-9
Salute the history-makers! Loughmore-Castleiney became the first club in the county to complete the county senior hurling and football double at Semple Stadium, Thurles, on Sunday last when they comfortably saw off the challenge of Aherlow Gaels to add the O Dwyer Cup and football crown to the hurling pennant won last month when defeating Eire Og, Nenagh.
This was Loughmore-Castleiney’s third attempt at the double. In 1983 and 1987 they lost the hurling finals but this year, with the Dan Breen Cup(hurling) on the trophy sideboard, they were determined to pull off the double, and they did so in style completely outplaying West combination, Aherlow Gaels(Aherlow-Lattin-Cullen) in the second half to record a ten points win – a margin of victory nobody predicted beforehand.
Making the achievement all the more remarkable is the fact that this was their seventh consecutive week-end in championship action, a huge test of their stamina and commitment, but one to which they responded in typical fashion, neither offering excuses nor seeking concessions, but simply getting on with the job.
