Republic of Ireland and West Brom soccer star Shane Long made a flying visit home to Gortnahoe Glengoole last week for the first time in 18 months for the 10th anniversary Mass of his late father Eamonn.

The 26 year old Republic of Ireland striker flew in to Shannon Airport from Birmingham and is this week assessing the announcement of Martin O’Neill as new Ireland Boss with Roy Keane to come on board as Assistant.

But, Long lamented the number of friends who have departed the Irish shores for sunneir climes in search of work.“Things are changing here. A lot of my friends have moved to Australia to get work, there are a few living in London and America as well, so even when you get home, there’s not the same bunch around. It is great to get back to the family, though, to see the nephews as well,” he said.
