Hurdles Coaching
WHEN?: Sunday December 1st 2013

WHERE?: Athlone I.T. (indoor track)

WHO FOR?:Hurdles coaches (or those who would like to be)
Athletes (U16 upwards) who have medalled at a national championship in 2012 and 2013

This is the first in a series of workshops aimed at both coaches and athletes.

A question often asked (in relation to coaching hurdles) is “what should hurdlers be doing in winter”? This first workshop will address this issue and hopefully many ‘answers’ will be offered & discussed with each coach going away with a plan to suit them and their athletes. The athletes will be part of the discussion on winter training for hurdlers, but will also complete a hurdle (technical/track) session appropriate to this time of year & get their hurdle technique (as it stands, on December 1st 2013) analysed – both athletes & coaches will be involved in this session. Shane McCormack will lead the sprint hurdle session and Hayley Harrison will lead the ‘long’ hurdle session.

Athlone I.T.’s café will NOT be open, so all participants (athletes & coaches) should bring a packed lunch or go off campus at lunchtime to buy something. There is no charge for the workshop as it is part of a national programme. Please let me know if you intend to come to the workshop via text, email or FB. My contact details are shown below.

Throws Coaching Feast
Irish throwing will receive a pre-Christmas bonus with the confirmation that notable International coaches will attend and deliver sessions at the National Throws Squad in Tullamore on December 14th.

Shot Put aficionados will be delighted that Petur Gudmundsson from Iceland will be returning to Ireland to follow up on his previous visit 18 months ago. Petur is the Icelandic record holder with a best throw in excess of 21 metres and he now coaches many of the leading Icelandic throwers. Petur is a very popular coach with an excellent coaching style, where he combines modern thinking on both rotational and glide techniques along with the old style methods of hard work in training.

Javelin throwing will also be pleased that Terry McHugh (Irish record holder and Swiss National coach) has agreed to lead the Javelin event group for the upcoming season. Terry hopes to bring along 2 very notable athletes from his ‘stable’. These are Asdis Hjalmsdottir (javelin 62.77m and finalist in London 2012 Women’s Javelin) and Lukas Wieland (75m thrower and Swiss Junior Record holder). Terry is an excellent communicator and consistently inspires his audience.

It is hoped that as many coaches and athletes as possible will attend and learn from one or both of the above coaches. The session is free to attend and open to anyone. Only National squad athletes can take part in the sessions, but anyone else can observe. So if you are interested in learning about throwing and how to get to the highest levels – Get to Tullamore Harriers track on December 14th (10am to 4pm). Petur Gudmundsson will also be doing a follow on session on Sunday morning in Santry from 10am to 1pm.
