Thurles should be in the frontline of Ireland’s bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup, heard this month’s meeting of Tipperary Co. Council.

Cllr David Doran (SF) welcomed the GAA coming on board to assist the IRFU’s bid to host the prestigious event, viewed by billions of fans worldwide. Thurles’ Semple Stadium would be well placed to benefit from the spinoffs in terms of tourism spending and visitors to the town, said Cllr Doran. “It will have hugely positive implications for the town, the county and the country. Up to 400,000 people would come to the country, with worldwide audiences. Tipperary County Council should be unanimously behind this bid. It’ll be one of the big ones!” Chairman Michael Fitzgerald (FG) said he absolutely endorsed the idea. “It merits an individual motion,” he said. A motion will be formally tabled at the January meeting of Tipperary Co. Council.
