Tipperary Handball Notes
Intermediate doubles 60x30 All-Ireland title for Tipperary.
In the Intermediate Doubles final in Williamstown in Galway Fergal Collins & David Hickey (Ballina) had a good win over Stephen Cooney & Ian Mc Loughlin from Mayo to bring back the Intermediate title to Tipperary for the first time since 2008 when won by Martin Mc Inerney & Ger Coonan. In the first game the Tipp boys got off to a flying start leading 5-0 after the first serves.
The Mayo boys made no ace on their next two serves and Tipp added 8 more aces leading 13-0 before Mayo finally got on the scoreboard making 6 aces in a row. The Tipp boys got them out once again and added 4 more aces to lead 17-6. Mayo only got in to serve once more making 1 ace before Tipp went in to finish off the Game 21-7. In the second game Tipp once again got off to a flying start leading 3-0. Mayo got them out but made no ace in their serves. Tipp made 1 more ace before Mayo made 9 aces on the trot. Tipp seemed to take the foot off the Gas but soon replied with two aces . Mayo once again got in to serve two more aces to lead 11-6.
In the next round of serves both sides tagged on 3 more aces . Tipp replied with 3 more to Mayo’s 1 to leave the score at 15-12 to Mayo. Aces were hard to get with Tipp adding 1 more in two hands and Mayo coming out without an ace. Tipp made 3 aces to lead 16-15 but Mayo fought back and forged ahead to lead 19-16. Tipp made 2 aces before Mayo went to 20 and looked like finishing with 2 hands. Tipp then levelled at 20 all before losing their hands again. Mayo failed to make that vital ace and Tipp went in to finish 21-20 to take the match and the Intermediate All-Ireland 60x30 title for 2013. On the same programme in Williamstown Padraig Quish from the Hospital Club in Limerick won the minor singles title beating Galen Riordan from Wexford and in the Senior singles Final Robbie Mc Carthy from Mullingar retained his title beating Eoin Kennedy from the St.Bridgets Club in Dublin 21-20, 21-10.
Fergal Collins will also contest the Intermediate singles final against Stephen Cooney from Mayo in Broadford in Limrick in two weeks time.
