Report on the National Championships on Sunday 11th August.

There was outstanding pulling at the National Tug of War Championships held at The Farm, in Grenagh, Co Cork on Sunday August 11th last, this was hosted by the local club of Donoughmore. 30 teams overall competed in six championships weights being held on the day, where we’ve seen five teams competed in the Ladies 405kg, four in the Ladies 435kg, four in the Youths 420kg, six in the 560kg Div 3 novice, and eleven in the 600kg combined of both Div 1 and 2.

In the men’s 560kg of Div 3 six teams competed. They were: Rockies, Farrenreigh, Ballinagh, Streamtown, Inchnapough, and the Shop, this was another hard fought battle between all six teams but the four teams to make it into the semi finals were the Shop v Ballinagh in which the Shop took this in two straight ends, and in the other semi it was between Farrenreigh v Streamtown where Farrenreigh also took this also in two straight ends, so in the final it was old rivals meet again as both teams are from Thurles in Tipperary and are well used to meeting on a regular basis. Farrenreigh hit hard in the first end and took the Shop about four feet but the Shop held on tight and wore them down to eventually take the first end, in the second end it was similar Farrenreigh working hard but making little ground until power ran out and the Shop then walked them all the way back and over the line to take the title and the gold medals, this now being their fifth Div 3 title of this year so they have only one more to go to complete their unbeaten stride.

In the pull off for the bronze it was between Streamtown v Ballinagh, Streamtown took this in two straight ends but were under severe pressure as Ballinagh didn’t give in too easy, so Streamtown took the bronze medals.
