North Kildare 10 Roscrea 7

Roscrea played into the wind in the first half and made all the running, being on top in the scrums and winning their lineouts with ease. They kept North Kildare pinned inside their own 22 for the first 15 minutes but they could not transfer this territorial advantage into points. Eventually, against the run of play North Kildare broke out and had a chance to go ahead but the penalty attempt was just wide. David Carney, Joe Smith, and Ronan Buckley made some good runs down the centre but nothing came of it. The try eventually came after a fine chase by Peter Queally who forced his opposite number to conceded a penalty. Roscrea went for a touch in the twenty-two. A five metre scrum followed. Again North Kildare conceded a penalty and Roscrea opted for a second scrum. This time they made no mistake, driving the home team back over the line and number eight David Carney got the touchdown. Peter Wright added the extra points to give Roscrea a 7pt to nil half time lead. They really should have had a bigger lead as they had dominated the half.

All changed in the second half, with North Kildare getting on top and Roscrea appearing to disintegrate. The visitors could not get out of their own 22 and it was only a matter of time before North Kildare would get on the score board. They did eventually after centre Paul McNamara had been sin binned for not rolling away. This left a gap in the middle of the defence and North Kildare got in for a seven pointer to level the match.

Incidentally , Paul was doing his level best to roll away when he was given the yellow card, but there was no punch in the Roscrea attack, it was one dimensional straight down the middle.

The ball invariably lost and North Kildare was able to clear. The Roscrea scrum was in trouble and the lineout was not working. North Kildare took the lead with a long range penalty. Roscrea had chances with lineouts in the opposition twenty two but could not win their own ball and North Kildare held an easily for a narrow win. Roscrea can consider themselves lucky to get a bonus point. Team: P.Wright,W.Maher, P.McNamara, ACarroll (capt.)
