Roscrea lost their top spot in the league table when they suffered their 1st defeat to a well motivated Malahide side that thoroughly deserved their win. Roscrea, who were in trouble in the scrum early on, never got into this game at all and allowed Malahide to dictate matters.
Malahide 22 Roscrea 8
There was a lot of talk and some indiscipline, resulting in three yellow cards and it is very difficult to get momentum going in a match when you are playing with 14 men for thirty minutes.
A full committed Roscrea would have won this game but that is the bad result out the way and they will get back on track for the remaining matches. Ger Stone and Joe Treacy were prominent early on, making big carries but it was Malahide with the aid of a strong breeze that exerted the early pressure and despite good defensive work by Malachy Maher, David Carney and Michael Lynch, Malahide opened the scoring with a penalty. The home team continued to press but Ger Stone stole a lineout and made some ground but a penalty resulted and Malahide increased their lead. Some excellent passing and running from Denis Moloney, Aaron Carroll, and Paul McNamara saw Roscrea get into the Malahide half and Aaron Carroll converted a penalty from 30 metres.
Malahide attacked using the wind into the right corner and retained their 6pt lead with a 3rd penalty. Despite good work by Denis Moloney, Willie Maher, Daryl carry and Joe Treacy. Malahide kept Roscrea pinned into their 22. There were quite a few scrums and Roscrea were struggling but they held out Denis Moloney cleared to half way. Malahide missed a long range penalty but continued to press and went further ahead with a penalty from in front of the posts before half time.
Trailing by but with the wind behind them Roscrea had every chance of getting more into the game and getting a few scores. David Carey, Enda Harte and Robert Dempsey combined well to get into the Malahide 22 but a Malahide scrum enabled them to clear and after some intense pressure they got in for a try to widen the gap to 14 points. Roscrea kept trying to run the ball. They probably tried moves that were not really on with the hard tackling. Malahide’s defence was up very quickly and forcing errors. One such mistake led to Malahide’s 2nd try when their centre pounced on a dropped pass into the middle of the field to touchdown to give them a 22point to 3 lead.
To their credit Roscrea never gave up and Aaron Carroll made the scoreline a bit more respectable with a try in the left corner to leave Malahide winning by 22points to 8 .

LEINSTER LEAGUE 2’S
This finished up in a big win for Malahide but at half time there was only 5 points between the sides, Malahide leading by 12 points to 7. The highlight of the match from a Roscrea point of view was the wonderful run out at defence by George Sutton, who went from one 22 to the other before he was over trailed. Kieran Stone was on hand to continue the movement but he was stopped just short of the line. Malahide were penalised and Roscrea took a quick penalty but lost possession and Malahide cleared.
Malahide got a hold on the game then, particularly when players from Roscrea were taken off to sub. For the first team, it left Roscrea very vulnerable and Malahide ran out easy winners.

The 2’s are in action again next Friday evening when they take part in a new format Midland League in Tullamore. Each team will play to 40 min matches with the overall winners qualifying for the final in Longford on 25th November , it will be tough as Roscrea are in a group with Tullamore and Birr but if they have their full complement of players available they are a match for anyone, it should be interesting!
