Cork Charity Cup Semi Final. Cashel 23 Highfield 24 - Cashel opened the rugby season on Saturday with a Cork Charity Cup semi final against Highfield at Spafield. Three Cashel players, Andrew Kelleher, Andrew Wallace and Ross Mullane made their senior debuts.

It was a new look Cashel team with some experienced players gone and a number unavailable. Cashel played with a strong wind in the first half but it was Highfield, playing their third match of the season who stared better and they were rewarded with a fine try by their outhalf Paddy O’Toole on 6 minutes. He also converted. However on 9 minutes Kelleher popped a nice ball to Kevin Leamy and he scored a fine Cashel try which Pat O’Connor converted. O’Connor and O’Toole Swapped penalties on the 12th and 15th minutes to kepp the match level at 10 all.

Cashel really came into the game on the 25 minute when Ed Leamy intercepted on his own 22 and raced to the other end to score a fine individual try . Pat O’Connor converted and followed up on the 32nd minute with a penalty to make the half time score Cashel 20 Highfield 10. Cashel at this stage were playing well against the wind.

On the 49th minute Highfield kicked deep into Cashel territory and some slack defending allowed Highfield in for a converted try. The fat was now in the fire but Cashel responed well and were well in control of the game with 10 minutes to go. They were awarded a penalty but did not opt to go down the line. It resulted in a turnever and Highfiled broke down the field and scored under the posts. O’Tooel converted to put Highfield ahead by a point against the run of play.

Cashel threw everything into attack and were given an opportunity on the 79th minute to win the match with a penalty but unfortunately in the difficult wind the ball drifted just wide and the chance was lost. Highfield defended well for the last few minutes and just about held out.Cashel can be pleased enough with the performance.

The forwards played well. The backrow of Ed Leamy, Brendan O’Connor and Michel Cross played well. The experiment of playing John Ed O’Connor at hooker worked and he showed what a versitile player he is. Michael Hickey had a very good game at scrum half and the midfield partnership of Pat O’Connor and Brian Silke defended well. kevin Leamy showed up well and Danny Lambe at prop had an excellent game. While the players were disappointed with the result they can look forward to a good season when they get a few more games under their belts.
