Avonmore Schools Junior Cup: Rockwell College 12; Castletroy College 14
Rugby games in this part of the world have an unenviable habit of ending in high drama.
This year’s Heineken Cup, last year’s Munster Schools Cup final instantly come to mind.
The trend continued at Clonmel RFC on Wednesday last when a last minute conversion from Rockwell outhalf Bill Johnston tailed to the left to deny the Cashel men an Avonmore Junior schools Cup first round victory over Limericks Castletroy.
With the game deep in injury time Rockwell centre Willie Coffey finally finished off a seven phase move inside the Castletroy 22. Had Johnston, whose own performance had been one of the reasons Rockwell were still in contention right up to the finish, landed the extra the game would have been tied on 14 points all but under the rules of the competition, Rockwell would have won the game as they would have outscored the Limerick men two tries to one.
The early exchanges in this game showed no sign of the high drama which was to come.
