Good win for Thurles - Thurles 16 Waterford City 3: Thurles RFC got back to winning ways in the Munster Junior League Div 2, after a 36:0 loss away to St Sennan’s and two weeks off, last weeks against Ennis due to a waterlogged pitch, with a 16:3 win over Waterford City in Loughtagalla on Sunday last.
With the weather conditions usual for November (wet and miserable) Thurles ground down a resilient Waterford City, pulling away in the last few minutes with a good opportunist Peter Coman try, Waterford City had a lineout deep in their own 22, the ball was passed back to the out half who fumbled the ball and the very quick Peter Coman was on hand to score and deny City of a losing bonus point. Eoghan added the conversion.
Eoghan O’Dwyer earlier had scored 3 penalties ( two in the first half )to one in reply from Waterford.
Eoghan’s third penalty was an exceptional kick against the wind from outside the ten metre line.
Thurles found it hard to get going even though they were on top in the scrums the lineout still requires more work. While the conditions didn’t give the backs much scope for fancy running, Eoghan O’Dwyer made some good breaks and ran some very good lines, but they did very well in defence with some very good tackling throughout. Nicky Irwin and Peter Coman linked up well at half backs.
While it wasn’t a day for anyone standing out Paddy Phelan was well above the standard of the rest, Brian Lyons, Joe Kelly at No8 and Teddy Skehan had good games also.
