Thurles Town advanced to the 5th Round of the FAI Junior Cup after a 2-1 away win following a well contested Cup tie with Vee Rovers on Sunday last.
Town started impressively with good possession and slick passing they created the better chances early on and were rewarded when going a goal up after 15 minutes following great approach play and a great finish from Padraig Fogarty. Town continued to put some fine moves together but failed to finish in front of goal. A determined Rovers hit back in the 30th minute with a well taken goal to see the sides level at the break.
In an incident packed second half that saw Town again create the better chances, however, Rovers contesting every ball made life very difficult and allowed little time on the ball. Town got the vital break with 20 minutes remaining when Michael Ryan was hacked down inside the area when through on goal Padraig Fogarty showed great composure to blast the resultant penalty to the roof of the net to put Town 2-1 ahead.
Rovers went all out in search of an equaliser but brave defending and a high work rate kept chances to a minimum for the home side while Town effectively counter attacked but failed to put the game out of reach, however 2-1 was enough to see Town march into the open round draw.
On Sunday next Thurles Town are home to Lough Derg in a League game with a 2pm kick-off. Players are requested to report to the Greyhound Stadium at 1pm.
