‘Rocky’ Appeals To Coillte Over Roads

NORTH Tipperary councillor John “Rocky” McGrath has welcomed the progress made on tackling the flooding issue in the Lackamore / Knockane area and has called on Coillte to continue to engage with North Tipperary County Council to ensure that no further damage is caused as a result of their on-site works or heavy vehicles.

Cllr McGrath explained that considerable damage would have been caused in the area in question if not for the quick thinking of the residents.

“There has been an on-going problem with flooding in the Lackamore area that is directly related to the work of Coillte and the run-off of water from their sites. There was a very serious issue with flooding in the Knockane area a short time ago that could have been disastrous and caused untold damage to homes only for the quick thinking of the residents in diverting water.

“I would like to commend the residents for their actions and assure them that works are now underway between the council and Coillte to ensure that such a situation does not arise again,” he said. “Furthermore, I raised concerns at the most recent area meeting that repaired roads in the Newport area were being damaged by the heavy vehicles used by Coillte. This is particularly evident in the Toor, Foilduff and Rearcross areas generally.

“There seems to be a lack of consideration and a refusal to engage from authorities in Coillte. It must be acknowledged by Coillte that the vehicles they use are damaging and tearing up smaller roads, some of which have been recently repaired. Coillte are taking no responsibility for damage done to roads in these areas and this is simply unacceptable.

“The council is working hard to maintain and update these roads to the best of their ability and it is simply not good enough for Coillte to damage these roads and walk away.

“These are very rural areas and any damage to roads has a hugely negative impact on those living in these areas. I would appeal to Coillte to give this issue immediate attention. I can assure all the residents in the affected areas that I am continuing to work and this matter and will continue to petition Coillte to take action,” said the Independent councillor.
