Having the Senior Cup on our own ground at the weekend offered a chance of a breakthrough at that prestigious level. Wins on Saturday over Tipperary and Mitchelstown led to a Sunday morning semi-final against Waterford Castle.
At that stage our hopes were to be disappointed. Points were won against Tipperary by Kieran Kennedy, Evan Long and Jon Foran in a three and a half to one and a half success. In the afternoon we had big margins from Kennedy, Emmet Leahy, Jim O’Dwyer and Long, with Foran “called in”.
Prospects looked dim against Waterford Castle from early on, as we were trailing in four of the five matches, only Long being ahead after nine holes. Recoveries took place on the second nine to the extent of making possible a “Medinah” surge from behind. Ultimately, though, the Castle prevailed on the 18th over Kennedy and on the 17th in the games involving Leahy and O’Dwyer. Long won on the 16th and Foran had come back to level with three holes left. So the margin against us was three and a half to one and a half. The Castle team went on to defeat Tramore 3 to 2 in the area final and qualify for the Munster semi-final. We hope for better luck this Wednesday at Carrick in the East Munster final of the Junior Cup against Tramore.
Advance news on our “major” event, the Captain’s Prize. It will be held over Friday to Sunday, July 19th/21st. Tossy Hayes has opted to have the competition a 36 holes event. There will be a choice of Friday or Saturday for the first 18; the second round will be on Sunday with leaders “seeded”. Entry will be on the B.R.S. system. A continuation of the ideal weather would be welcome. The course right now is in immaculate condition, much praised by the visiting clubs for the Senior Cup and equally appreciated by ourselves. Well done to Course staff and the committee in charge.
Open Singles results: B. McCormack (4) 38; P. McCormack (17) 38; S. Smith (16) 40; gross, K. Kennedy (plus 2) 36. The C.S.S. was 34. Bill McCormack had been featuring lately in the honours list and this victory was further evidence of his ability and good form. The hurling goalkeeper is a fine striker of the ball. On Thursday he had 18,20 points from a two over round, being level par on the second nine with a useful deuce on the 14th. Paddy McCormack’s nines were 21,17 with eight pars and an unfortunate zero at the 18th. Student member Sean Smith had 20,20 with birdies at 3rd and 11th. Kieran Kennedy shot a level 72 for the gross category on 36 points.
