Our Second very successful Senior Open Week was held in Larkspur Park from Friday August 24th to Saturday September 1st with a fantastic entry of 230 players.
The tournament threw up all sorts of combinations father and son, Bernard and Greg Ryan, husbands, wives and neighbours were pitted against each other and the Ahearn brothers lined up with and against each other. Martina Ryan must hold the record for the most games played this week with a tally of ninety one but after titanic battles in all three finals it was not to be.
A large group of supporters both young and old turned out to cheer on one of our longest serving members Eileen O’Brien in her semi final match but unfortunately she was not successful on this occasion but we hear she already in training for next year. It was great to see former and present members and their families coming up every night to watch matches and chat with each other about when they were playing.
After the mixed weather during the week, the sun shone for our finals day on Saturday. The morning commenced at 10am with the aroma of breakfast rolls, burgers, hot dogs and fabulous cakes, tarts and buns baked by own members. We would like to thank everyone who contributed, Tony Quinn and Ursula Ryan our BBQ experts and everyone who helped out in the kitchen and indeed in any way. The success of this week would not be possible without it.
Prize giving took place in the Nissen Hut with our new chairperson Benny Dudley thanking all who participated, the organising committee of Barbara Ryan, Teresa Anglim, Catherine Fitzell and Bryan Fogarty. He also thanked his own wife Deirdre, daughter Amy and Bryan’s wife Margo for their help and support during the week. Benny expressed his appreciation and gratitude to New Inn Tennis Club for the use of their courts and all the local clubs who supported the tournament during the week. To run a tournament of this standard Larkspur Park Tennis Club would like to thank all our sponsors for their generously contributions.
