Munster Senior ‘A’ League Ursuline Convent, Thurles 1; Scoil Mhuire, Cork 2 - There’s many a slip twixt lip and cup one was enough for Ursulines as their Munster League Title hopes faded at Brittas Road when Scoil Mhuire sent them on their away.

The Leesiders 2-1 victory kept them on solid ground and a possible place in the play off, should they win their remaining game. All of this, despite the fact, that the Cork side had a disastrous start when they conceded a goal in the 3rd minute, a concerted drive by Ursulines ended with Emer Herlihy getting the touch. A home result could have been registered had the hamsters scored even one of the many chances they had in that follow up period of 20 minutes. Time and time again Edel Nyland, Aoife McGrath and Orla Lynch spear headed attacks but poor finishing ruined their day. The visitors spurred on by Ursulines’ misfortunes, struck for the equaliser on the run up to half time when Holly Lehane found the net. Midway through the second half, Ursulines’ fate was sealed as Emma Dobson fired home Scoil Mhuire’s winner after a series of four short corners tested the home defence.

Ursulines: Sylvia O’Donnell (Keeper), Claire O’Dwyer, Anna Crotty, Maria Kinane, Rachel Hodgins, Edel Nyland, Aoife McGrath, Orla Lynch (Captain), Julie Murphy, Emer Herlihy, Aine Phelan, Laura Costello, Kate Crotty, Rachel Perdue, Fiona Shortt.

While the Seniors’ League chances may well have been scuttled the same fate didn’t strive the Juniors. Far from it as they enjoyed as did their supporters, if all saw it, the magic of a goal 20 seconds after push off. The name linked to this feat was that of Alison Bourke who was also to score Ursulines’ 5th during the second half. A solo effort after ten minutes by Rachel Perdue was followed by Kate Crotty’s reverse stick strike on a short corner, which came after Becky Danaher’s good run. Ursulines’ fourth came ten minutes after the restart when left winger Ciara Cummins pounced. Next up came Susie Osborne’s dazzling run which Alison put away, followed immediately by Rachel Perdue’s speedy dash into the circle and had Siobhan Murcham’s name on it as number six was recorded. Number seven, again had its beginning out field when Niamh Conlan latched on to possession and headed for goal, off loaded to Siobhan and converted by Rachel, for a 7-0 rout.

Conditions, weather wise along Limerick’s Dock Road on Thursday last were pretty horrible, incessant rain on what was already a bitter cold morning. Ursulines had three teams on duty at Laurel Hill’s new astro turf complex for early morning games starting at 11 a.m. Despite the elements we had some great passages of play with Susie Osborne and Aoife Booth dominating at midfield. Sarah Kelly, Cliona Collins and Breana O’Gorman were a resourceful back line. Rain was about the only thing that got through all morning. The first half was scoreless and remained so, until midway through the second period when Claire Farrell scored from an acute angle. Dervla Lynch and Claire Stakelum were most unlucky near the end not to add to Ursulines tally.

Like the previous game, one goal sufficed here, as well to give Ursuline the win and the points that went with it. An early goal, this time from Clare Farrell in the sixth minute. Again Ursulines had the power in the mids with Cliona Heenan, Siobhra Dooley and Alacoque Daly doing very well. Not too bad in defence either as Galina Kennedy, Rebekah Collins and Jane Ryan had their moments. While up front Esha Hourihane Clancy and Sarah Stakelum always looked dangerous when ball came their way.

Ursuline (2nd Years): Ruth Everard and Amy Keelan (Keepers), Leah Van Veen, Sarah Kelly, Cliona Collins, Breana O’Gorman, Aoife Booth, Susie Osborne, Rachael Quinlan, Claire Farrell, Dervla Lynch, Avril Bergin, Jane Ryan, Claire Stakelum, Sarah Stakelum, Esha Hourihane Clancy, Galina Kennedy, Ruth Ronan, Nuala Fitzgibbon, Clare Farrell, Kate Walsh, Alacoque Daly, Jenny Morrissey, Cliodhna Heenan, Siobhra Dooley.

To their eternal credit both teams served up a wonderful display of hockey in dire conditions. As the clock ticked on, a honourable draw looked on the cards, but the two minute sign by the umpires seemed to reignite Ursulines. Once more Brona Dowling propelled herself up field and sent a screamer of a shot into the circle across the goal face to the left post. Sophie Hayes was waiting for it, the deadlock was broken. From the restart, Brona repeated her previous effort. This time Ciara Nyland was the recipient, giving Ursulines a 2-0 win. Great for the Thurles girls but most unfair to a gallant Colaiste side who deserved far better.

Ursulines held the whip hand in the first half forcing the pace and the play. Colaiste takes the credit for a resolute defence, averting many short corners in the process. Becky Coonan, Brona Dowling and Maria Ryan were industrious workers all through. The rearguard of sweeper, Orla Cashman, Ruth Herlihy and Isobel Collins made life tough for Colaiste’s attackers.
