Thurles Cricket Club Continue Good Form

Its now 4 wins from 5 as we continued our good league form by picking up another victory against Cork county on Saturday last. Playing in the fantastic Mardyke grounds on a beautiful sunny day we opted to bat on winning the toss and it certainly paid off as openers Fintan Moore and Keith Marchbank accelerated right from the off.

In fact this would turn out to be a club record first wicket partnership as we managed to reach 108 without loss before Keith was bowled after a fine captains innings. Fintan continued the good work and despite the loss of a few quick wickets Conor Daly bedded himself down to help keep the runs flowing as we continued to frustrate the hosts. We finally finished with a total of 199 which was about par on a decent wicket with Fintan reaching his third century of the season finishing on 124 not out at the end of the innings. Special mention to Conor Daly and Denis Walker who have recently joined us from Ballyeighan cricket club and acquitted themselves very well on the day.

200 needed for victory therefore by Cork county although any hopes they had of reaching this were firmly put to bed once the Cawley brothers got stuck into their openers. Sean and Aaron, both in their teens, bowling fantastic spells and picking up wickets regularly to ensure the run rate got way out of control early on thus leading to some wayward batting from the Cork men. Sean picking up 4 wickets and could easily have had a five for! (we won’t mention who dropped him!!). Aaron also picking up a wicket and once our openers finished their spells the game was effectively won. Tim Laubscher, Serath and Romald followed in frustrating the hosts with some solid bowling and despite a little flurry from the Cork tail, when Ronan Kennedy swapped the keeper gloves to have a bowl and pick up the final wicket, victory was ours. Wicket takers were Sean 4, Aaron 1, Tim 1, Serath 2, Ronan 1 and also a run out. A good solid win therefore and we cement our third place position and close in on the top two. Only four games remain this season and we travel to Kerry on Saturday next.

Team last Saturday: Keith Marchbank, Fintan Moore, Ronan Kennedy, Sean Cawley, Aaron Cawley, Tim Laubscher, Denis Walker, Conor Daly, Serath, Romald, Tom Maxfield.
