Activity accelerates. The advent of Summer time this weekend coincides with the first of the “Golfer of the Year” singles. St. Patrick’s Day featured a Team of Four. Friday had a “shotgun” Mixed while a “champagne” three-ball scramble on Sun. capped a busy spell.
Thurs. Team of four results: G. Ryan (12), B. Mulcaire (14), J.A. Phelan (15), J. O’Mahony (17) 98; D. Carroll (28), N. Turner (22), R. Carroll (19), T. Maher (17), 94; J. Dorney (13), P. Dorney (23), N. Loughnane (11) 94; A. Finn (16), T. J. Semple (8), P. Finn (16), P. Maher (18) 94; ladies, M. Lonergan (13), M. Corcoran (13), D. Connor (23), A. O’Grady (28) 94.
A single point at the 18th is generally a costly finish. Not so for Gerry, Billy, Jimmy and John. They had 97 points in the bag and could afford a late slip-up. Four seven pointers, three on in a back nine of 50, had them secure from pursuit. Gerry Ryan and Jimmy Phelan shone with a couple of birdies each. The four teams on 94 were headed by the 46, 48 of Delia, Nora, Richie and Tom. The count-back among the two on 47, 47 went to John, Patsy and Niall on their last six over Andrew, T.J. and the two Pats. The four ladies scored 49,45 for the category award. The national festival was well recognised by the traditional musical group’s fine contribution on the day - our tanks to them.
The Fri. Mixed competition resulted: S. Troy, L. Barrett, E. Hughes, B. Bahan, 49; J. Ryan, D. Cleary, B. Moore, F. Corcoran, 45; C. Davy, B. Coghlan, M. Duignan, T. Gleeson, 45. The regular Fri. evening Mixed will begin this season on May 6th.
Sun. held a novelty in the shape of a “champagne” scramble - no “bubbly” involved, But a two-to-count format with each player playing out the hole after the choice of drive among the three. Details: D. Smee (10), S. Smee (26), L. Duggan (15) 104; A. Slattery (29), E. Hayes (32), A. O’Sullivan (34) 100; D. Hurley (16), F. Dempsey (21), T. Everard (19); Ml. Clohessy (17), P. Stakelum (18), J. Stakelum (14) 98. The top three beat the century with 53,51 for a good margin. The two on 100 were 49,51 and 51,49 with the fourth on 48,50. Derek’s deuce at the 14th and Liam’s pair at 3rd and 5th were notable in their victory.
The Bogey Cup returns to its customary spot as the first Singles of the year after last season’s September setting. Declan Corcoran’s 5 up prevailed on that occasion and set him on the way to “Golfer of the Year” honours. Players have choice of Sat. or Sun. The format is, as usual, against par in this first of twelve counting events.
Course development continues. After the re-shaping of the 8th green approach with a timber framework at the pond, a project is under way at the 9th tee to elevate the “box” for better perspective of the 9th and of the parallel 4th in the other direction, with greater safety the objective. A sturdy construction makes excellent use of sleepers. It will be quite a feature.
The popularity of the Table Quiz held some time ago made a repeat very desirable and so we have another informative session coming up on Friday night at 9 p.m. Teams of four will cope with the “inquisition” in a spirit of competitive fun. A strong attendance is urged. A putting competition will again be an extra feature.
