Recently a Munster select boxing squad traveled to London’s Alexander Palace to take part in Europe’s largest amateur boxing event.

Every June, 300 male or female boxers from all over Europe take part in this prestigious event. A team of 12 boxers from Munster - organised by Munster President Jerry O’Mahony and Thurles Boxing Club secretary/matchmaker Danny Coppinger - decided to take on the best in Europe. Three boxers from Thurles Boxing Club took part in this event: Mark Lennon 71 kg youth, John Connors 91kg senior, & Paddy Clavin 85 kg senior. Mark Lennon was very unlucky to go out in the early stages of this tournament, losing 2/1 split decision to Gutshy Gunanda of Haringay Police. John Connors made the final of the 91kg, a heavy weight clash in which Connors lost out to Sherif Musah from Islington Boxing Club London leaving Connors with the silver medal. Paddy Clavin had one of the hardest battles in the semi final to overcome Abbas Allahdad from the Haye Club London. Big Abbas Allahdad met his match in the Templemore man Clavin, who took all three rounds to book himself into the final. There, Clavin met Karotis Mockus from Dagenham Club London. Firing himself up for this final Clavin went all out all with guns blazing winning all 3 rounds. This was a proud day for Thurles Boxing Club and the Clavin family. Thurles boxing Club has gone from strength to strength and are well able to compete with the best. We have a great team in Coaches/commitee members and the support of the Thurles Community. Our 2014/15 season begins on Tuesday August 12. There are limited places left. Contact head coach Danny Graham 0892046147 for more information.
