Thurles Golf Club - Large Numbers Back In Action

A quiet enough week on the playing front with the biannual, but very necessary hollowtining treatment of the greens taking precedence and culminating in a two day ‘shut-down’ of playing facilities. The course was re-opened on Thursday and all eighteen holes are now back in play. The benefits of this important work will be apparent to all members in a short time.

It was good to see a large number of members back in action on Sunday for the 14 hole v-par competition, with the honours going, by and large, to some of our longest serving and experienced members. Top prize went to Benny Maher(16) with an excellent 5 up, despite the bitter cold and continuous breeze. Matt Butler(12) had a very fine 4up, followed closely by Michael Bracken(14) on 3 up. The gross went to Mark Kennedy(5) on 1 down. Pat Maher(18) took the final prize on 3 up having earned his reward with a strong finish.

Golf continues next Sunday with a 14 hole 3 Ball Better Ball (Any Combination) Semi Open. A reminder to all members that our BRS opens for entries at 8.00pm each Friday evening.

This week we extend our sincere sympathy to the Callinan family Ardbawn, on the death of their sister Maura. Dick and Denis have been lifelong members of our club and, of course Eamonn was our valued Club Steward before moving on to manage his own business. A keen supporter of Tipperary hurling Maura was married and long term resident of Dublin. We extend our sympathy also to her husband, son and daughter.
