Curley Heads Bogey Cup Return

The Bogey Cup, as its name indicates, goes back a long way. It is a Singles against Par nowadays. The re-fixture of this year’s competition for Sunday last produced the usual ups and downs in scoring - a sort of profit and loss affair according to whether a hole is won, halved or lost. Neville Curley took the honours with two up.

Details: N. Curley (11) 2 up; Ml. Russell (20) 1 up; J. Corbett jr. (9) 2 up; gross, E. Long (1) level; K. Doherty (6). The C.S.S. was all flat.

A player who loses the first two holes and does the same at 17th and 18th would, on the face of it, be an unlikely winner.

Neville, However, won six holes against those four losses and his 2 up took the trophy. By contrast, Michael Russell won the last two to claim runner-up with his 1 up. Junior member John Corbett won five and lost three for third according to club rule.

The gross went to Evan Long for his level return, one down after nine, one up with a superb one under for the back nine for parity with the card.

It went right down to the last three in a tie with Kieran Kennedy. Ken Doherty shot level par on the second nine for his 1 up. A field of 127 competed. Reduction only C.S.S.

Thursday’s Open Singles had the players battling with blustery conditions, as the scoring level suggests.

Results: B. Fogarty (20), Co. Tipp 37; P. Byrne (23) 36; L. Kemerer (14) 35; gross, D. Corcoran (3) 29. Billy led the way with 17,20. Late pars at 15th and 16th proved significant in his success. Pat Byrne had 18,18 for second place, with three pars to credit. Lynn Kemerer scored 19,16 for third. A deuce at the 14h and a 4,4,5 ending put him ahead in the gross department.

We have a pair of Scratch Cups coming up next Sunday. Scoring will be on a gross basis.

The Intermediate event is for handicaps from 10 to 18, while the Minor caters for those on 19 plus. Note that entry is limited to those who qualify within those handicap ranges.
