Munster 1st Years Cup Semi-Final
Ursuline Convent, Thurles: 4
Mount Mercy College, Cork: 0
ht winger Ruth Hasset had the ball in the net after the explosive start of Kate Hogan, Lucy Gillespie and Jasmin Curran. Ursuline pressure in the fifth and 10th minutes were fruitless as the Mercy defence was pretty strong in those set up pieces. Eimear Ryan and Caoimhe Quirke on either side of Avril Ryan stood firm in defence and delivered some great ball up field to their attacking army where Ciara Nyland, Avril Quirke and Katie Murphy were in full cry. Follow up work to a short corner in the 18th minute resulted in Ursulines second goal. Katie was deemed to have got the all important touch, inches ahead of three or more who stormed the goalmouth. Individual runs by Ruth Lucy,
Kate and Katie fizzled out before “Mercy” launched their own assault as the half time whistle was due. Keeper Anna Grace got her boot to a dangerous ball and with the ever vigilant sweeper, Katie Kavanagh on hand to clear to safety, that whistle blew.
Like, the first period start, Ursulines were out of traps very smartly, with Ciara, Katie and Ruth on the rampage. By now the College girls were wise to the dangers that went hand in hand with these players and closed ranks on them.
Immediately, on the counter charge themselves, they found the fresh legs of Thurles’ defenders, Siobhán Ryan, Megan Long and Shóna Power too pacey for them. Ursulines increased the tempo for the last quarter and forced four corners in the process.
Three were repelled but “Mercy” had no answer to the last of them when Ciara rifled home for number three. And Ciara had the last word when she converted Jasmin’s defence splitting run as the clock headed for the red zone. Coach Sandra Rossiter and her young squad have one more hurdle to cross, away to Presentation Convent, Bandon.
