Tipperary’s Greg Broderick cemented his position as one of Ireland’s top show jumping riders, with a string of excellent results at last week’s Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, including a superb win in Fridays 7 & 8 year old International Championship qualifier with Golden Exchange.
The competition attracted the cream of 7 & 8 year old horses from around the world and it looked as though victory was heading to Dutch rider Gert Van Bruggink with Vita II.
He led the competition until Greg entered the arena as last to jump with the Lisa Cawley owned Golden Exchange. The pair went on to shave over 2 seconds off the target time to take a famous win.
Third place went to Brazilian rider Marlon Zanotelli with the highly rated Carhagena 6.
In Wednesday’s 6 year old championship qualifier Greg finished in second place with Mary Ellen De Ruschi’s stallion “Hitchcock van Overis”.
On Friday Greg partnered Mary Ellen De Ruschi’s Gurtera Cara Dubh to third place in the four year old horse class comfortably putting them through to Saturday’s final where they were to finish in fourth place in this prestigious competition.
The ‘Cruising’ 6 Year Old National Championship sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland saw Greg and MHS Shamrock finish in seventh place
In Sunday’s ‘Flexible’ 5 Year Old National Championship sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland, Greg finished in third place with Arraghbeg Clover. Joint owned by Greg and Declan Orpen, Arraghbeg Clover was the winner of the 4 year old Championship at the RDS in 2012 and were winners of the second 5 year old championship qualifier at the Ballsbridge arena on Thursday last.
Sunday’s International 7 & 8 Year Olds final sponsored by Connolly’s Red MILLS saw Greg Broderick finish in third place with the Caledonia Stables owned MHS Going Global, being one of just three double clear rounds in the competition. Earlier in the week Broderick finished in fourth place with MHS Global in the first 7 & 8 year old championship qualifier.
Not content with his haul of prizes in the Jumping ring, Greg was also amongst the prizes in the Showing classes, winning the RDS Broodmare Futurity with Arraghbeg Clover.
