The National Community Games Athletic Finals in AIT, Athlone, Co. Westmeath took place on Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th August & brought to a close a great track & field season for Tipperary athletes.
The Games were a wonderful weekend of competition, sunshine, friendship, & fun & 100% credit to all involved in its organisation as it was an extremely well-planned & well-run event. There was joy for Daniel Ryan, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. who won gold in the Boys U/14 80m Hurdles when he ran a magnificent race beating both the AAI Boys U/14 & U/15 National Hurdles Champions to claim his medal & Sharlene Mawdsley, Newport A.C. who won Silver in the Girls U/14 80m Hurdles with a terrific run, just missing out on the gold medal by inches.
Other athletes who shone were Ellen O’Shaughessy, Nenagh Olympic A.C. who won Silver in the Girls U/8 60m.
Phoebe Murphy, Clonmel A.C. took Bronze in the Girls U/16 100m, a year out of her age. Deirbhile Ryan (competing for Co. Clare), Nenagh Olympic A.C. won Bronze in the Girls U/16 Javelin with Mairead Teehan, St. Flannans placing 4th & winning a Pewter medal & Ciara Mockler, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. also winning a Pewter medal in the Girls U/16 Discus. Darren Dunne & Killian Cullagh, Nenagh Olympic A.C. put Tipperary to the fore in the Boys U/16 Marathon when they both won individual medals placing 3rd & 4th in the individual race with Anthony Tobin & Aaron Egan, Clonmel A.C. coming home closely behind them enabling Tipperary to win 2nd place overall in the Team event, their first for quite some time. A wonderful achievement. Well done to all our Tipperary athletes who took part over the weekend, not all were medal winners but they proudly represented their Clubs, Parishes & County & gave a great account of themselves.
