The Garrykennedy 10K Fun Run in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation, was held on Sunday 26th August, 2012 and was such a huge success that the organizers have decided to make it into an annual event!
There were 150 runners/walkers registered from all over the county and from as far afield as the USA and everybody was in good spirits on the day.
The weather was very kind to the participants and the sun shone for most of the day, however in typical Irish style, there were a few intermittent showers, but even that couldn’t dampen the spirits on the day. The first lady home was Sinead Nealon in 49:40, second lady home was Geraldine Manning and in third place was Sinead’s sister, Eimear Nealon in 51:37.
The first man home was Shane Mullaney in a stunning time of 36:21, second was Ger Kirby and in third place was Jimmy Creamer the captain of the Portroe Hurling Team. In first place for the U16 children’s section was William Glass from Mountshannon, Co. Clare (son of Denise Larkin, Garrykennedy) and he was also 4th home overall which, considering that he is only 15 years old was a great achievement.
Eddie Cahalan (Abbeyleix) was first home in the over 60’s category in a great time of 48:16. Finally, Chloe McCarthy from Killaloe, Co Clare (daughter of Jody Larkin Garrykennedy) was the first “Jogger with a Buggy” home.
The Duck Race was great fun and was won by Shane Mullaney who just couldn’t be beaten in any event on the day. The raffle prizes were won by Josie Ryan, Mark Gennery, David Gleeson, Deirdre Ahern, Mairead Keating, Dan Larkin (Jr), Dan Larkin (Snr), Deirdre Power, David Gleeson, Sarah Madden, David Brown, Philo Freeman, Nicola O’Hara, Matt O’Hara, Nigel Kennedy, Mark Gennery, Mary Seymour, Teresa O’Connor, Eimear Nealon & Emma Keating.
The organisers would like to thank everybody who helped out in any way to make the day such a great success and a huge thank you to all the participants who helped raise €2,500 (and counting) on the day, which brings our total raised so far to approximately €6,500.
A special thank you to Mark Muldoon, Mella Kennedy, David Brown, Dan Larkin and James Duggan who cycled 178Km from Dublin to Garrykennedy on Friday 24th August and also to Mark Rafferty, Conor McVeigh and James Duggan who swam from Williamstown to Garrykennedy 4.5km on Saturday 25th and raised much needed funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. Good luck to James Duggan and Ger Kirby who are both taking part in the Ironman event in Galway next weekend!
