Templemore golfer, John Galvin had a special Hole in One on Monday (6 May). He was taking part in the “Tame the Blue Monster” Open Competition in Tulfarris Golf Club on the shores of Blessington Lakes.
The competition gets its name because it is played from the Blue tees over a course that measures no less than 7,165 yards - the same as the average length of the courses on which golf’s four Major competitions are being played in 2013.
John’s “ace” came at the 174 yards 11th hole bordering the lakes. According to his playing partners he hit a perfectly flighted 5 iron onto the green and with one bounce it went straight into the hole.
The shot was special in that John has been golfing for 50 years and this is his first Hole in One. Tulfarris Honorary Secretary, John Horan, who witnessed the event also commented that it was special in another way in that this was the first ever Hole in One achieved from the Blue tees at Tulfarris.
Congratulations John - after 50 years trying, it just goes to prove the adage that “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again”.
