One hundred and nineteen competitors teed up for the Thursday Open Singles which number included thirty one visitors honouring us with their presence. The course is in pristine condition and subject to wide acclaim from all players.
John Lonergan, Cahir Park (20) took the honours with a fine 41 pts (21-20) and he was followed home by Daragh Stakelum (11) with an equally fine 41 pts (22-19). Thomas Fogarty (4) was third with 39 pts while the gross went to Aidan Ryan (3) on an excellent 35 pts – one over par for the course. Fifth prize went to the ever improving and talented Tom Meehan Junior, (10) still a juvenile, with 38 pts.
It’s been a while since a visitor won our Thursday Open Singles and fitting that the visitor should be the multi-talented Cahir Park man. A prominent rugby player he went on to excel as a Referee in the All Ireland League and served the IRFU well over a period of ten years. He has also featured even more prominently on the GAA front in recent years as a Referee and is currently serving as the Football Referees’ Assessor for the Tipperary County Board as well as holding a similar post at Croke Park. It seems like only last week we were celebrating the selection of his sister, Sinead, representing Paris, as Rose of Tralee. Indeed it was back in 1997 when Sinead brought honour to her family and County. Our congratulations to John on his win and indeed to all the other prize winners.
SATURDAY OPEN SINGLES (Stroke)
Saturday’s Open Singles Stroke competition was well supported on what was a beautiful Summer’s day. The honours went to Bob Coghlan (20) with an excellent 68 – Bob’s second win in the space of two weeks. He was followed home on the same score by Robert Jordan (17) also on 68. However, Bob’s pars on 15 and 16 were to prove decisive. Our highly respected and long time Club Photographer, Jim Finn (21) returned a fine 71 to slot into third place with an extremely steady round. Kieran Kennedy (+2) took the gross with a round of 73. Kieran was out in 38 after bogeys at 3 and 6 but, true to form, made amends on the home run with birdies on 13 and 16. How gratifying to see our highly respected former President, Jim Phelan (12), back to full health and fitness returning a fine round of 72 and being rewarded with 5th place. Birdies at the 4th and 18th would surely have added to Jim’s satisfaction with his round. Overall though the day belonged to Bob Coghlan and how good it is to see this Club stalwart rediscover his competitive edge after a lengthy period of absence from the winner’s enclosure, although I expect the Monday morning Seniors might have something to say about that.
SUNDAY OPEN SCOTCH FOURSOMES
One hundred and thirty five competitors went to post for the Open Scotch Foursomes on Sunday last. After a dull start the day brightened up considerably and conditions were quite pleasant from midday onwards. The honours went to Annette Boland (23) and Gerry Mernagh (17) with a fine 66. Exceptional golf on the first nine with birdies on 3 and 5 coupled with one overs at 2, 4 and 6 saw these relatively high handicappers shoot a gross 37 on the first nine. Their back nine was steady rather than spectacular. Annette and Gerry were followed in by Michael Doyle (14) and Tom McGrath (19) on 66.6. Two fine birdies on 14 and 16, with a bogey on 17 saw this pair complete the back nine in a one under 35. Fine shooting indeed. Malachy Gavin, Senior (21) and Junior (7), finished on 67.5 after a solid round where birdies on 9 and 15 certainly helped their cause. The gross went to Marian Finn (7) and Pat Fallon (8) with a fine 77. John O’Riordan (16) and Adrian O’Keeffe (12) returned a very respectable 68.5. Birdies at 14 and 16 were sufficient to keep them ahead of a closely following group on 69’s and keep them in the final prize position.

Congratulations again to all of our players, team selectors and supporters who give up their time to represent and support the Club.
