McGarry Cup Final A Thriller

The final of the McGarry Cup Club Matchplay Championship took place on Monday last and what a thriller it turned out to be between the Jimmy Bruin playing partners Tommy Looby and Colin Condon. After some cracking golf in the first 4 holes, Colin took the early advantage to be 2 up, but Tommy hit back immediately with back-to-back birdies on 5 & 6 to level the match. Tommy edged ahead on the 8th and held this lead until a birdie on the 12th from Colin levelled the match again. A missed par putt from Tommy on the 13th handed a 1 hole advantage to Colin with 5 holes to play. 3 missed birdie opportunities on 14th, 15, & 16th looked like they could comeback to haunt Colin as Tommy birdied the long Par 3 17th to level the match. A dramatic last hole as Tommy’s tee-shot could not be located , so a provisional ball had to be played. Colin was sitting on the back edge of the 18th and it looked like it was all over. A fantastic 30ft putt from Tommy salvaged a bogey 4 on the last and this meant that Colin had to hold a 7ft downhill putt to win the match. The putt was sank and this denied history as Tommy would have been the first man to win the McGarry Cup twice. A great finale to a fantastic matchplay competition. Diarmuid Heafey (12) was the winner of last weekends open singles competition with a score of 44 pts. Michael Mullin (18) (Listowel) was second with 42 pts with Matthew Connolly (12) was third with 41 pts. Denis Burke (5) won the gross prize and Jason Strang (19) won the high handicap section. The team of Don O’Connell, Aidan Kenny & Con Lucey were the winners of last Thursdays open scramble with a score of 33.6 for the 12 hole competition. Charles Brophy, Tony White and David Noctor were the qualifiers in last weeks Clonmel Oil Open Singles qualifier. The Open Singles will take place on Monday and Tuesday every week with the final taking part on Saturday the 1st of October.
