Munster Senior A League
Scoil Mhuire, Cork: 1
Ursuline Convent, Thurles: 4
Ursulines reaped the benefits of the early season friendlies when they recorded a double victory over Cork School, Scoil Mhuire in Munster Leagues at the Cork Harlequins Hockey Complex on Wednesday last. The winning 4-1 score line doesn’t tell the true story as the Thurles girls had to fight tooth and nail to wipe out the early Cork goal which came in the 8th minute. Ursulines had successfully defended short corners in the 4th and 5th minutes and moved up field. But the Cork girls were soon attacking once more. A stinging shot with goal written all over it was brilliantly saved by keeper, Sarah Timmins. But, in like a flash, came striker Holly Lehane to put away the rebound. And so began the journey for parity.
A dangerous run down the right by Laura Costello was the prelude to Ursulines’ three pronged attack with short corners in the 23rd, 27th and 28th minutes. A super display by the Cork keeper ensured that Scoil Mhuire held on to their slender lead as the half time whistle blew. Two minutes after the restart, Ursulines peppered the Cork goal mouth with shots from corners. Three were fruitless, until Rachel Perdue, in broken play after a corner movement, broke down, weaved her way into the goal area and cracked home the equaliser. In a five minute spell, shots hit the posts, were inches wide at both uprights, together with further saves by the boots of the Cork Custodian. In the 48th minute constancy served its purpose when the nimble footed Rachel threaded the same pathway as before and gave Ursulines the lead. Ten minutes from time, Susie Osborne worked her way down the left, beating all and sundry and cracked in an angle shot to the right post where Becky Danaher was on hand to ensure that it crossed the line for a 3-1 lead. Becky increased that to 4-1 when she sped into the circle and slotted home from close range.
