Byrne And O’Dwyer Have Singles Wins
Vincent Byrne’s chairmanship of the handicapping committee hasn’t in the least taken from his keenness and ability as a player. After a number of sound performances this year he brought off a high class victory in the Open Singles on Thursday. Details: V. Byrne (6) 40; A. Rossiter (13) 40;
P. Treacy (12) 38; gross, K. Kennedy (plus 2) 35. The C.S.S. was 35. Vincent grossed a two over 74 with equal nines of 20 points. He dropped only two shots in a solid performance. Andy Rossiter’s 40 was 23,17 to take second. His 23 at the turn came from 38 shots, with birdies at 3rd and 6th. Pat Treacy had 19,19 for third and the gross again went to Kieran Kennedy, who shot 37,34 in the process.
Dick O’Dwyer advanced from second a week before to head the P.G.A. Tankard Singles. Details: D. O’Dwyer (18) 40; P. Byrne jr. (3) 38; J. Callanan (16) 40; gross K. Kennedy (plus 2) 36; E. John Callanan had 23,17 with three birdies on the first nine to be placed third as a junior member. The redoubtable Kieran beat par five times to win the gross with 36 points.
