Full marks to a pair of that name! Mark Kennedy had a second Open Singles victory in a couple of weeks. Mark Shanahan (Castlemartyr) won our Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday last. Full marks to a pair of that name! Mark Kennedy had a second Open Singles victory in a couple of weeks. Mark Shanahan (Castlemartyr) won our Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday last. The other big success of the week went to Shannon member Colm O’Flynn, who took the Junior Scratch on Sunday in a tie with Seamus Troy.

The Thursday competition resulted: M. Kennedy (4) 41; D. O’Dwyer (15) 38; B. Callanan (15) 39; S. Moloney (11) 38; R. Murtagh (19) 37. The C.S.S. was 34. Again Kennedy had the double distinction of heading both nett and gross as he scored 19,22 for nines of 37,34. The outstanding stretch was undoubtedly from 14th to 16th as he carded 2,3,3 for successive birdies in a sparkling back nine to be way ahead. Dick O’Dwyer had 21,17 with a 4,4 finish that lifted him into second place after a pair of earlier zeroes. Student Brian Callanan was placed third according to rule - he showed his high promise with a gross 38 for 23 points on the second nine. Another junior in Shane Moloney took fourth with 19,19 which featured a deuce at the 3rd as well as eight par figures. Ryan Murtagh was another to suffer a couple of blanks but did well to finish 4,5 for fifth.

The Senior Scratch went to a familiar visitor in Mark Shanahan. The Munster interprovincial has had several fine cards in the Open Singles series. He has strong Thurles connections through his father, Martin. A level par 72 (35,37) sufficed for victory. It contained five birdies and as many drops to be one ahead of Kieran Kennedy’s 73 (36,37) and the 74’s from Declan Corcoran (36,38) and Jon Foran (35,39).

The Junior also went for export as Colm O’Flynn’s (5) 38,38 pipped Seamus Troy’s (8) 37,39 on the gross 76 total. Deuces at 5th and 11th were Colm’s most helpful lodgments. Seamus also played very well on a course at maximum length in current slow conditions. Third gross was won by Ml. Moloney (5), Co. Tipp. with a 77 that began poorly with 42 to the 9th but found better form with a one under 35 shots home - three birdies in the last six holes. The nett prizes went to Ml. O’Dwyer jr. (9) with a 68 and to Kieran O’Dwyer (10) on the same figure. Our best thanks to loyal regular sponsors Boyle’s Home and Gift Store, Thurles for their support of an event that drew over a hundred entrants. P.J. Mackey was unluckiest player of all - he ended with a 77 in spite of beginning the round with a seven - and ending it with a similar “double” bogey.

The Mixed Foursomes result: L. Moloney (9), V. Fitzgerald (22), B. Moore (31) 48, M.C. O’Neill (15), P. Fitzpatrick (23), T. Gleeson (19) 46, L. Barrett (18), M. Tuohy (28). C. Daly (31) 4.
