It was a busy time in Larkspur Park Tennis Club last week with the semi finals of the winter league being played on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the finals down for decision on Saturday night.

There was great sense of excitement building up to the matches with the first games starting at 6.30. First up were Nodlaig Ryan’s team Mary Heffernan, Deirdre Gillespie and Liz Kingston, who had an excellent game against Cait Bennett’s team Mairead Hayes, Marguerette Kelly and Cathy Burns. Nollaig’s narrowly taking the win.

At the same time Ger Anglims team Ursula Ryan, Martina Ryan and Sinead Bergin, were having a ding dong battle in their semi final pairing with Michelle O’Meara’s team Teresa Anglim, Mary Crosse Ryan and Shelagh Marshall. This game got the crowd going with a plenty of vocal encouragement from both players and supporters, Gers team ran out winners of this one.

The men’s matches got under way at 8.30. Joe Barry’s team of Aidan O’Gorman, Arthur Fitzell and Dave O’Meara were extremely unlucky to be beaten by Michael Perdue’s team Paul Anglim, Donal Ryan and Dylan Fitzell. This one saw father and son Arthur and Dylan Fitzell line up on opposite sides of the net, and as is the case in most of these encounters the old dog had to play second fiddle to a younger superior talent. On at the same time was match between Naoimi Campell’s team Isobel O’Brien, Vera Sheehan and Edwina Maher who were pitted against Ger Maher’s team Teresa Shanahan, Teresa Connolly and Josephine Maher. This was a very close affair with Naoimi’s team getting the rub of the green.

There was great atmosphere in the park on Saturday night. This was the first social evening since the upgrades were completed and it was a roaring success. Here’s to many more.

Membership is now due. There will be a key fob system in operation from Monday 27th. Membership can be paid during the day at the park or at any time to a committee member. Forms available in Buckley’s too. We are now on Facebook. “Like” Larkspur Park to keep up to date on the goings on!

Last Sunday, Larkspur’s U. 16 tennis team travelled to Mallow to play Ballinlough, Cork in the final of the Munster Shield Competition.

From the start it was evident that this would be a thriller between two well matched teams. The standard of tennis in the six singles matches was really excellent. Pat Muldoon, Niall O’Connor, Ciara Fogarty and Laura Connolly all won in three sets. John O’Connor (sub for Brian Treacy) and Maria Fanning played very well but just came up short against Ballinlough’s no. 1 boy and girl respectively. Going into the three doubles matches Larkspur led 4-2, however securing that last match to win the tie was nerve wracking for their travelling supporters! Ciara and Laura duly obliged to give Larkspur a well deserved 5-4 victory. Congratulations to all the players concerned.
