The President’s Prize vies with the Captain’s as a high profile competition. It differs in being held on a single round and in using the points system. William O’Grady’s big occasion extends over three days, with choice of Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the mixed field which reflects modern structure of membership in parallel play for the men’s and ladies’ awards - a juvenile/student prize is also featured. The available time zones are: Fri. 7.30 to 10.15; 3 p.m. to 4.30; Sat. 7 to 9 a.m.; 2 to 4.30 p.m.; Sun. 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry is on the B.R.S. We look forward to an event which pays tribute to William’s tenure of the leading office, both pleasant and efficient, and to a most enjoyable weekend for him, for Breda and the family. Uniformity of conditions over the three days would be very welcome too.
Mark Kennedy emulated his brother Kieran in quality of golf in the Thurs. Open Singles by having both best gross and top nett, a very fine performance which gave him a runaway victory. Details: M. Kennedy (5) 42; P. Byrne (10) 37; E. Hughes (11) 37; S. Dunne (17) 36; D. O’Dwyer (14), Co. Tipp. 36. The C.S.S. was 35. The leader’s 20,22 contained four birdies in a one under 71 shots (37,34), with two of them in the last four holes. Paul Byrne had 21,16 from a nice first nine of 38 strokes. Evan Hughes scored 19,18 with birdies at 8th and 15th the highlights. A 4,4 finish gave Shane Dunne fourth place with 18,18. Danny Dwyer also had 18,18 to maintain recent prominence for the Dundrum member. Matching the C.S.S. were: J. Slattery (13), P. Byrne jr. (4) and Ml. Hassett (16).
Jimmy Ryan (11) took the Sun. Singles on a tie with Eamonn Stakelum (14) on 39 points with 19,20 against 21,18. Ryan’s win was due to a very steady run of one over from the 13th in a round of eleven par figures. He had blanked the 3rd. A most costly zero thwarted Stakelum as it cropped up at the 18th and set up the count back. Wayne O’Mahony (18) was next on 38 (16,22) despite a pair of blanks. He was level from 11th to 18th except for a point-less 14th. Evan Long (scr.) took the gross with 73 shots for 35 points after being one under to the 9th. Seamus Mackey (21) took fifth with 38 (21,17). Next in line were P. Fallon (9) and J. Fanning (11) on 36. The C.S.S. was 35.
